November 15 Declared National Philanthropy Day in Canada

(Ottawa, Ontario)   The Minister of Canadian Heritage has officially declared Nov. 15, 2009, as National Philanthropy Day in Canada.

National Philanthropy Day (NPD) is celebrated around the world as a day to recognize the work of charities and remember the extraordinary achievements that philanthropy—giving, volunteering and social engagement—has made in all aspects of life.

“The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is proud to have been one of the original founders of National Philanthropy Day, and we’re thrilled that the Canadian government has officially recognized this very special day,” said Paulette V. Maehara, CFRE, CAE, president and CEO of AFP. “Many thanks to Minister Moore for his declaration and support of National Philanthropy Day, and we look forward to celebrating NPD in Canada for many years to come”

On National Philanthropy Day, which was first celebrated in 1986, donors and volunteers are recognized for their philanthropic work and the public is encouraged to get involved with charities in their communities. More than 100 NPD celebrations take place around the world.

Canada is the first country to officially recognize National Philanthropy Day since its creation in 1986. AFP, which is a primary sponsor of NPD, is supporting a bill in Parliament that would permanently recognize Nov. 15 as National Philanthropy Day every year.
