Executive Director, Laing House Foundation

Laing House is a peer support organization for youth with mental illness where members can embrace their unique gifts and find their way in a caring and supportive environment.  Laing House youth are between 16 and 30 years of age and have a diagnosis of mood disorder, psychosis, and/or anxiety disorder.  It is a youth-driven, community-based organization where young people who are living with a mental illness can get the support they need to rebuild their lives.  Laing House programs, including employment, healthy living, education, outreach, and peer and family support, help youth recognize and develop their own strengths, talents, and resources in a welcoming, respectful, and collaborative atmosphere.

Summary

The Executive Director of the Laing House Foundation leads the fund development team and committees of the Board of Trustees in the strategic assessment, development, implementation, execution, analysis, and evaluation of the fund development plan, fund development activities, budget and relationship management goals to meet the financial objectives and community development needs of Laing House.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Providing leadership, support and volunteer management for Board of Trustees
  • Providing leadership, support and volunteer management  to Special Events, Major Gifts, Foundation, Individual Giving, Planned Giving and Investment committees
  • Assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating fund development plan, including donor recognition strategy and gift processing policy
  • Supervising, managing, coaching, mentoring and evaluating Fund Development Officers
  • Practicing exceptional relationship management with stakeholders (members, donors, sponsors, supporters, community partners, Board of Trustees, committee members, volunteers, staff, media) to develop and maintain widespread support for Laing House
  • Working as integral member of executive and senior  management team to reach goals of Laing House as defined in the strategic plan
  • Budgeting and financial management for Laing House Foundation
  • Seeking innovative approaches and applications to fund development within and outside charitable sector – analyzing challenges and opportunities for growth

Essential skills:

  • Minimum of five to seven years leadership  experience in a senior or executive fund development role
  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in related field, or combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated experience with nonprofit management, including reporting directly to a Board of Trustees or Board of Directors
  • Five to seven years experience in fund development, event management, public relations, relationship management, communications, volunteer development, financial management and human resource development
  • Ability to bring partners together and collaborate to both plan for future growth and attain it
  • Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills, with public speaking expertise
  •  CRA regulations expertise
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, research,  write  and evaluate strategies related to fund development
  • High degree of ethical standards – integrity, honesty, respect, trust and accountability
  • Detail oriented and extremely organized, possessing excellent time management skills
  • Creative problem solving and critical thinking skills with a propensity to be results oriented
  • Ability to achieve consensus in the face of differing opinions while preserving the integrity of all parties involved
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, PowerPoint and fundraising software (@Ease, Raiser’s Edge, etc.)
  • Positive attitude, flexible and good team player

Assets:

  • CFRE designation
  • Member in good standing of AFP
  • Member in good standing of CAGP
  • Proficiency using social media tools to further fundraising activities
  • Personal volunteer experience with nonprofits and/or charities
  • Employment experience in for-profit sector – corporate sector, small business, entrepreneur
  • Knowledge of mental illness and issues facing youth at-risk

-Special Projects Officer

The QEII Foundation is actively recruiting a leader to manage and further develop the organization’s community initiatives portfolio as Special Projects Officer.  Reporting to the Manager of Clinic Based Fundraising, the Special Projects Officer will support the Annual Giving Department with strategies and initiatives to increase gift revenue.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and advance community fundraising initiatives to increase and promote community involvement.
  • Promote, manage and expand the grateful patient program (Angels in Action) by coordinating donations, providing recognition and building strong relationships with stakeholders.
  • Cultivate relationships with QEII Health Sciences Centre staff and provide support for fundraising initiatives.
  • As key contact for Veterans’ Memorial Garden donations, manage donations and orders for the Walk of Honour.
  • Represent the QEII Foundation in the community and at the QEII Health Sciences Centre by speaking at events and meetings; some occasional evening and weekend events.
  • Manage community initiative web presence and related social media.

Qualifications, Education and Experience:

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with peers, donors and staff at all levels
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and short deadlines and with minimum supervision
  • Highly creative self-starter with a collaborative approach and a demonstrated success record
  • A relevant undergraduate degree (ie. Business, Public Relations) or acceptable combination of relevant qualifications  and experience
  • Minimum of three (3) to five(5)  years of related experience with increasing responsibility in positions in development or a closely related field
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, and related social media knowledge
  • Experience in fundraising, event planning and coordinating and managing volunteers is an asset
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required

This is an excellent opportunity for a results focused professional who wants to contribute to strengthening our community by working in partnership with various workplaces to generate revenue through fund development.

This high-energy position includes developing donor and volunteer relationships, setting fundraising goals, implementing strategies and analyzing results. Working independently and within a team, you will support numerous workplace campaigns in various industries, present information about community needs, and take action to maximize support.  This role provides an opportunity to work with people both inside and outside of an office environment.  (A vehicle is required as travel is involved within the HRM area).

Qualifications include a customer service background, fundraising or sales/marketing experience, excellent written and verbal communication skills, computer proficiency and a proven ability to present an informative and persuasive message to individuals and groups.  Experience working with and/or leading volunteers is preferred.  You must be personally aligned with our mission, act with integrity, think conceptually, and have the ability to manage many priorities during peak activity periods. Your background includes a degree or diploma in a related area plus two years in a similar position.  Equivalencies will be considered.
